The Antique Diamond Ring Is A Timeless Classic

Without a doubt, an antique diamond ring is a real classic but some women are not attracted to this type and style of jewelry. In time, some women may take a liking to antique jewelry since they will see that the workmanship and filigree work found in these rings is superior to the craftsmanship found in contemporary pieces.

An antique diamond ring has to be cared for and first you will need to check and see if the stones are secure. You may consider having a goldsmith inspect and fix any problems associated with the ring and have them clean it at least once per year.

A Family Heirloom

You may have seen the television program Antiques Roadshow and on this show they feature several antique jewelry pieces. Some of the families on this program have been fortunate enough to have been handed down an antique diamond ring from their grandparents.

If you are engaged, you may decide to give this ring to your bride on her wedding day. Before making this decision to give her the antique diamond ring, first see if she likes the jewelry piece and if so, you can have it inspected by a jeweler to see if it needs any repairs.

Your antique diamond ring may have chipped or missing diamonds and may need to be resized. Does the ring need to have the diamond reset? Does your future wife like the ring’s setting or would she prefer something different? You will need to talk with her in order to find out the answer to these questions.

There are different types of settings and she could prefer either a prong, bezel, channel, bead, cluster, flush, or ballerina setting. You can find a description and picture of each of these types of settings online so that she can decide which style best suits her taste.

Buying An Antique Diamond Ring

If you know that your fiancée likes vintage jewelry, she may also appreciate antique jewelry. An antique diamond ring can be purchased at an antique shop and at some fine jewelry retailers. One online auction site that features predominantly jewelry is bidz.com. Unfortunately, I have only seen a few antiques jewelry pieces up for auction on the site. Another online auction site that has many antique jewelry pieces up for auction each day is eBay.

As a rule of thumb, if you decide to bid on any jewelry piece on eBay, first look at the seller's feedback rating to see if they have a number of negative feedback strikes against them. Secondly, contact the seller to see if the jewelry piece is GIA certified and if so, they will need to send it to you along with the purchase of the antique diamond ring.

Thirdly, ask the seller about the condition of the piece in order to determine if the diamonds are loose in their setting. If you decide to purchase the item even though it needs repair, you will need to bring it to a goldsmith who specializes in the restoration of antique jewelry. An authentic diamond ring that is in good condition will be a great investment since its value will increase over time.

Different Eras

A vintage diamond ring can fall into a few different periods in history. One era is called the Art Deco period (1920's), and the style of diamond cutting used at this time was the European cut. The main metals used in jewelry making in this period were platinum and white gold. The Edwardian period in history was from 1900-1910 and mainly used round stones in the manufacture of their diamond rings. The metals used in the manufacture of an antique diamond ring from this period were silver, platinum, or white gold.

There are thousand of antique diamond rings to choose from on the market today and it is important to determine if the diamonds are genuine, and if the jewelry piece suits the style requirements your fiancée desires.
